Mr Yusuf Alabi, Vice Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, has blamed private motorists for most road accidents in the territory.
Alabi made the allegation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.
He asserted that drivers of commercial vehicles were more responsible and professional on the highways because of their training and the checks on them by various unions such as the NURTW.
“Our drivers are disciplined and when we notice any of them engaging in illicit drug abuse or even alcohol, we do not even allow such driver to take off.
“We impound the vehicle and suspend the driver until he is mentally stable. The driver would further be interrogated and if found guilty, he would be sanctioned, ” he said.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday interrogated former Governor of Akwa Ibom State Godswill Akpabio over allegation of financial crimes. Akpabio’s arrest yesterday is fallout of the petition by an Abuja-based lawyer and activist, Leo Ekpenyong, who had on June 8 this year petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and the EFCC, calling for Senator Akpabio’s probe and accusing him of looting.
