APC to Sheriff: Includes return of stolen fraud in your master plan

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has told the newly appointed National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ali Modu Sheriff, to include how his party and its cronies will return public funds allegedly stolen under the 16 years rule of the PDP in his master plan. The APC National Secretary Mai Mala Buni threw the challenge yesterday, in a statement he issued in reaction to remarks made by Sheriff, on Wednesday in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, that the PDP would soon come out with its “master plan” on how to regain power in 2019. The statement described Sherifff’s comments as idle and laughable, adding that it reminded the APC of the 16th century ‘English language proverb and nursery rhyme’ which states: “If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.” It said while the APC was reluctant to join issues with “Sheriff’s idle 2019 postulations,” Nigerians were aware that the current economic hardship and institution...

Mathematics education key to economic diversification.

Managing Director of Promasidor Nigeria Mr. Olivier Thiry has advocated the need to pay greater attention to mathematics and science education, saying it would enhance government agenda on economic diversification. Thiry, who made the call at a press briefing in Lagos on the 2016 edition of the Cowbellpedia Secondary School Mathematics T.V Quiz competition, posited that science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education is all that Nigeria requires at this time to broaden its economic base from a primary commodity-driven one to a services-oriented economy that the developed world boasts. “Economic development in the developed world has occurred at the speed and intensity it has due to a strong foundation of STEM education,” he said. “STEM courses are pivotal to a nation’s technological advancement and mathematics, which has historically been seen by students as an unattractive subject, is a key component of STEM education,” Thiry said. This year, he said, the top pri...

The minister of Science and Technology, Mr. Ogbonnaya Onu, has said the economy of Nigeria cannot be diversified without the application of science, technology and innovation. Onu made the disclosure while welcoming the Taraba State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr. Alhassan Hamman, in his office in Abuja. He said the application of science using both local and foreign technologies will help fast-track growth and diversification of the economy of the state, from its present mono-product economy. According to him, China and India moved out of their poverty levels to their present developed state using science, technology and innovation, adding that the mistake the country had made in the past was the neglect of science and technology in its development programmes. He said Federal Government in 2012 reviewed the 1976 science policy holistically to cater for the diverse natural endowments of the country using its research institutes as drivers in harnessing its rich miner...

MTN's SIM re-registration raises concerns========================= The ongoing MTN SIM registration exercise is rising concerns about the safety of its subscribers' data and its motive.

The ongoing MTN SIM registration exercise is raising concerns about the safety of its subscribers’ data and its motive. Some subscribers and industry players have alleged that the operators and NCC might have lost the data base from that exercise. They said the recent re-registration being carried out by the operators, most especially by the biggest player MTN, is a pointer to that fact. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had, in 2013, ordered all telecoms operators in the country to register their subscribers’ SIM cards. The NCC spent N6.2billion on the exercise. More than 100 million subscribers were registered at the time. The exercise ended in June 2013, but SIM card registration was allowed to continue at the points of purchase. Three years on, the operators, especially MTN, are now asking Nigerians to re-register their SIMs again. This has made some analysts and observers to begin to ask questions as to what had happened to the initial exercise. But MTN told Dail...

INEC’s State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mallam Halilu Pai, disclosed this yesterday in Lokoja, at a stakeholders’ meeting in preparation for the rerun elections scheduled to hold across 1,988 polling units in the state.
