Sallah: Ram sellers complain of low patronage

Barely five days to Sallah, rams and cattle dealers at the Sokoto’s Kara livestock market are complaining of low patronage. Chairman, Sokoto Ram Sellers Association, Alhaji Abubakar Buba Gaya, said compared to last year, the dealers are recording poor sales this year. The chairman, who has spent 37 years in ram business, attributed the poor patronage to economic downturn. “Last year was far better because around this time, we had buyers all over the market. A dealer sold 30 to 40 big rams on a daily basis. But this year, we hardly sell 10 rams daily”, he said. He said an average ram cost between N30,000 and N50,000 while bigger ones go for around N160,000 to N200,000. The chairman said despite the economic hardship, the ram prices are higher this year. APC BACKS ESTABLISHMENT OF SPECIAL COURTS FOR HATE SPEECH

The National Youth Caucus of All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday in Abuja expressed support for the establishment of special court for hate speech in the country. The National Chairman of the group, Mr Mark Nsimbehe, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of the group’s news briefing that the courts would help to guard against divisive speeches in the country. Nsimbehe said that the group was in support of every effort targeted at unifying all ethnic nationalities in Nigeria. “We are for peace, we are for progress and we are one Nigeria; so, we urge the Federal Government to step up and arrest those disgruntled elements and their sponsors accordingly. ‘’ he said. Buhari to address Nigerians on Monday

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to make a national broadacast on Monday August 21, 2017 by 7:00am. Buhari is expected in the country later today after oer 100 days of medical leave in London. The Special Adviser to the president (Media and Publicity), Femi Adesina, confirmed this in a statement. "President Muhammadu Buhari returns to the country later today, after receiving medical attention in London. The President had left the country on May 7, this year, after handing over power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who has functioned as Acting President since then. President Buhari is expected to speak to Nigerians in a broadcast by 7 a.m on Monday, August 21, 2017. He thanks all Nigerians who have prayed ceaselessly for his recovery and well-being since the beginning of the health challenge," he said

INEC REMOVES NAMES OF 190 NON NIGERIANS FROM VOTER REGISTER

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it has ordered the removal of the names of 190 non-Nigerians from the country’s Voter Register as part of measures to clean up the register. The commission disclosed this in a statement issued by its Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mr Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi yesterday in Abuja. The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) recently retrieved several Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and National Identity cards from foreigners who were alleged to have registered as voters. Osaze-Uzzi reiterated INEC commitment in ensuring that the Voter Register was free from unqualified registrations. (NAN)
