The Managing Director of the Unity Bank Plc , Mr. Henry James Semenitari is yet to resume from a compulsory leave ordered by the board of the bank in order to probe some allegations of the misconduct against him, Daily Trust learnt.
Source said the MD/ CEO was asked to proceed on 10-day leave in the first place and additional seven days after which ended last Friday, but up to yesterday Mr Semenitari didn’t return back to office.
Source said the action by the board may be connected to the rampant sacking of workers, alleging that about 400 workers were sacked since his inception last year in the bank.
Another source said his expensive lifestyle prompted the board to call him to order at the time the bank is trying to recuperate.
When contacted, the spokesperson of the Bank, Theodora Amechi said the allegation are not true and that the MD is on his annual leave and will resume soon. The source said the board of the bank may likely meet today to decide on the fate of the MD. Mr Semenitari took over as MD/CEO in January 9, 2014.
The board of the bank comprises of Mr Thomas A. Etuh as Chairman, Alhaji Aminu Babangida as Vice Chairman, Mr Hakeem Shagaya, Alhaji Ibrahim M Kaugama, Dr Oluwafunsho Obasanjo, Richard G. Asabia, Mrs Aisha A. Abraham, Mr Abubakar Abba Bello, Mr Dahiru Chadi, Mrs Oluwatomi Somefun, and Mr Temisan Tuedor.
Daily Trust leant that Aisha Azumi Abraham, has since been appointed as Acting Managing Director/CEO of Unity Bank Plc pending the conclusion of the probes.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday interrogated former Governor of Akwa Ibom State Godswill Akpabio over allegation of financial crimes. Daily Trust gathered that Akpabio honoured the invitation by the anti-graft agency to explain allegations of looting of the state’s funds during his tenure. Sources told our correspondent that Senator Akpabio was being interrogated late yesterday evening at the Abuja head offices of the Commission. He was spotted at the EFFC office in company of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Rickey Tarfa, at about 5:20pm. Akpabio’s arrest yesterday is fallout of the petition by an Abuja-based lawyer and activist, Leo Ekpenyong, who had on June 8 this year petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and the EFCC, calling for Senator Akpabio’s probe and accusing him of looting.
